Extraocular

What is Extraocular?
“Extraocular” refers to the muscles that surround the eye and control its movement in different directions. These muscles allow smooth and coordinated eye movements. Issues with these muscles can result in misalignment, poor eye coordination, or difficulties in focusing.

Why Extraocular Surgery is Done:
Extraocular surgery is performed to correct misalignment of the eyes, restore normal movement, and improve vision coordination. It is often necessary in cases where non-surgical treatments have not been effective, and the patient’s ability to focus or see clearly is impaired. The surgery helps realign the eyes, enabling better vision and reducing symptoms like double vision or eye strain.

Causes of Extraocular Muscle Disorders:

  • Strabismus (crossed eyes): When the eyes do not align properly.
  • Nerve damage: Injuries or diseases affecting the nerves that control eye movement.
  • Trauma: Physical injury to the muscles or surrounding tissues.
  • Thyroid eye disease: Inflammation of the extraocular muscles due to thyroid issues.
  • Congenital issues: Some individuals are born with weak or misaligned eye muscles.

Treatment:

  • Non-surgical: Glasses, prisms, or eye patches can sometimes improve alignment.
  • Surgical treatment: Extraocular muscle surgery corrects misalignment to restore normal eye movement and improve vision.
  • Vision therapy: Exercises designed to strengthen coordination and control.

At Srijan Eye Hospital, we provide expert evaluation and personalized treatments to help improve eye movement and overall vision quality.
